Aumack and Clawson Relatives in the CIVIL WAR (1861-1865)
We
know of several relatives that served in the Union Army during the CIVIL
WAR. There were four and possibly five enlistees on my husband's side of
the family and one on mine. My great uncle James Kerr, of the Eastern
Townships of Quebec enlisted but I haven't found civil war records on him to
date but know he fought in the battle of Bull Run and returned home 'wind
broken'.
On my husband's side of the family:
I Co. 12th Michigan Infantry:
1. Jacob Aumack - enlisted at age 43, g-g
grandparent of my husband, Reg Miller
2. John Aumack - son of Jacob. He
was 18 when enlisted and died in Arkansas during Civil War duty.
3. Hiram Clawson - enlisted at age 44,
another g-g grandparent of my husband's. Died in Arkansas during Civil
War duty.
The battle details are below. Take note of the dates the individuals joined to give you an idea of what battles they may have fought.
We have two sources for Sullivan Clawson's
military involvement. I suspect the latter is more accurate: K Co.
11th Michigan Cavalry (a local history book for Berrien County, Michigan)
OR
A Co. 8th Cavalry Michigan (Civil War
Databases at ancestry.com)
Sullivan (S.M.) CLAWSON - Sullivan was the son of Hiram and brother of Jane (Clawson) Aumack, my husband's g-grandmother. Sullivan enlisted at the early age of 15. It is interesting to note that civil war database records say he was 18 so he may have stretched the truth in order to enlist. Unlike his father Hiram, Sullivan came home to tell the tales.
There is another Hiram Clawson and a Harrison Clawson from Ohio in the Civil War records. I believe they are probably uncles or brothers of our Jane Clawson Aumack. There are also 18 Aumacks, mostly from NY and NJ and probably all related. There may be more Aumack relatives if one uses one of the many name variations to do a search. For example John Aumack mentioned above is in the civil war databases as John H.Aumick, age 18, Pipestone Twp., Berrien Co., Michigan.
Details on each individual and the regimental
history is below.
